14.05.2025 – 18.05.2025
In May, Salzburg will once again become a meeting place for people who care about literature. A festival for literature will be celebrated, even if the current global political situation seems to give little cause for celebration. A festival brings people together and into dialogue; literature can sharpen our view of the present and the past uniquely and open up new perspectives on the most diverse realities of life. Once again, this year, a top-class programme of inspiring readings and discussions will be presented over five days.
The festival will open with readings by Katja Lange-Müller, Elke Laznia and Reinhard Kaiser-Mühlecker at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre. In Unser Ole, Katja Lange-Müller tells a story with great precision that resonates for a long time. Three women, incapable of love, and in the middle of it all, the mentally impaired Ole. The protagonist in Reinhard Kaiser-Mühlecker’s novel Brennende Felder (Burning Fields) defies all morals and conventions – she is prepared to do anything for her independence and her goals. In her prose poem Fischgrätentage (Fishbone Days), Elke Laznia devotes herself to the last days of a loved one in haunting images, combining grief and comforting confidence.
Under the title Fridays for Literature, the Young House of Literature and the Salzburg Literature Festival last year invited young people to organise an event that they would like to experience at the literature festival. A group of young adults then met on several Fridays to talk about literature and possible formats – and to independently conceptualise the following event: Eva Reisinger, Halimah Al Sharif and Matthias Gruber will read from their books and talk about their approach to dealing with socio-politically relevant topics – from feminism to migration – in literary texts. Sara Čošabić, Aileen Gimpl and Christoph Strubegger have not only designed the event and given it a title – they will also host the evening together.
