Jonathan Monk, the British artist, often repeats, alienates and scrutinises pioneering works of conceptual art and minimal art in his works. His aesthetic strategy oscillates between homage and persiflage. In doing so, Monk appropriates art history and its myths, examines the rules of the exhibition business and the aesthetic category of originality. In murals, paintings, sculptures and photographs, he reflects on the tendency of contemporary art to function as a pure reference system and demystifies the narrative of art as the result of an ingenious creative process. The series of works, which has been running since 2016, shows earlier exhibitions by the artist in other institutional contexts. As a growing archive, the wallpapers not only visualise the artist’s exhibition history, but also function as a display for the current presentation of works.
