The first edition of the Vienna Digital Cultures Festival is a co-operation between Foto Arsenal Wien and Kunsthalle Wien. It follows the City of Vienna’s Media Art Festival and is jointly organised by the two institutions every year. In a two-week programme of art, performance and discourse, the two institutions combine their commitment to examining the cultural impact of new technologies. Curated by Nadim Samman, this year’s edition is entitled ‘Model Collapse’. The central exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien-Karlsplatz brings together works by five international artists who explore the interfaces between politics and digital culture. An augmented reality installation entitled //ONTOLOGICAL_GLITCH:// by Vienna-based artists Belma Bešlić-Gál, Catherine Spet and Markus Wintersberger can be seen in the public space around Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz – in cooperation with Kultur 1. On two evenings, REAKTOR will host video screenings that explore generative AI in different ways – both in terms of content and form. In doing so, they will direct the cinematic gaze towards hidden, often suppressed aspects of our current reality. The festival’s discourse programme begins in the Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab with Kate Crawford, author of the international bestseller Atlas of AI. Over the course of the festival, numerous voices will have their say, helping to shape current debates on machine learning, culture and politics. As a counterpoint to the critical examination of the darker sides of the digital, two club nights will provide a cathartic discharge and re-embodiment.
