The town of Sfântu Gheorghe, a unique cultural hub, is located in a multi-ethnic region (with Hungarian, Romanian and German communities), at the crossroads of numerous cultural influences and with a curious public thirsting for discovery. The centre is housed in a former tobacco factory (21-25 Kós Károly Street), which is a listed building. The Austrian Cultural Forum was involved in the brainstorming process from the very beginning, working with the municipality and the Andrei Mureșanu Theatre to reflect on the European cultural potential of Sfântu Gheorghe. In particular, the centre will host projects (newly) created locally by the members of the EUNIC Romania network, the cultural institutes of the EU countries.
To mark the opening, the Austrian Cultural Forum is offering the following varied programme:
Exhibition ‘Borrowed Gods. Stone Viennese’ by Christine de Grancy, who sadly passed away recently. Opening on 25 April, 17:00, in the presence of Mercedes Echerer, curator of the exhibition.
Film screening – ‘Kafka’s Last Journey’ by Clemens Schmiedbauer, 28 April, 19:00.
Film concert and discussion – ‘Die Stadt ohne Juden’ (1924, directed by H. K. Breslauer), with the pianist Gerhard Gruber, 30 April, 17:00.
Exhibition ‘Bad Tatzmannsdorf’, co-operation with the Hungarian Cultural Institute, Liszt. Opening on 30 April, 19:00
