One of the central themes of the Viennese artist Anneliese Schrenk is skin. One of the materials she uses for her work is ‘reject skin’ – leather that is no longer used in the manufacturing process due to some kind of ‘defect’. Tattooed onto stretcher frames, the artist burns delicate motifs reminiscent of early modern anatomical drawings into the surface. These ‘skins’ reveal beauty and cruelty in equal measure and circulate around themes such as life in an affluent society, the animal exploitation industry, body cult and perception. Anneliese Schrenk also arranges iron and steel instruments that are used in the slaughter process or in livestock farming into sculptures and installations, opening up new horizons of meaning full of ambivalence – both pleasurable and painful, sometimes poetic and quiet, sometimes penetrating and almost brute. For the tresor, the artist has created a unique spatial arrangement of pictorial work, installation and sculpture.
