Ghana is growing. With one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, the country is developing into a central hub for trade, innovation and culture. The capital Accra is buzzing: Markets are full of life, new architecture characterises the cityscape and a young, creative scene is making a name for itself internationally. But as the city grows, it is also changing in other ways – rubbish is becoming a constant part of everyday life. Where official structures fail, people are taking responsibility themselves. They sweep streets clear, clear waterways, create awareness. In the midst of challenges, new paths are being forged – shaped by those who refuse to resign themselves to the status quo. Samira Saidi’s transmedia practice combines creative expression and social justice work. In doing so, she dismantles toxic stereotypes in visual storytelling and offers alternative perspectives to amplify the underrepresented.
