With the words ‘I only exist when I write’, Ingeborg Bachmann expresses the existential importance of her literary work. The Austrian poet is now being honoured with a comprehensive exhibition at the Casa di Goethe Museum. Over five stations, visitors are metaphorically guided through the places that characterised Ingeborg Bachmann as a person and writer: Klagenfurt, Vienna, Munich, Zurich, Berlin and, of course, Rome, of which Bachmann says she ‘learnt to live here’. This icon of literary history continues to inspire contemporary artistic creation to this day. In addition to photographs, previously unpublished letters from Bachmann’s estate, including letters to Max Frisch and Nelly Sachs, will be on display in cooperation with the Literaturhaus Munich, the Austrian National Library and the Rome Cultural Forum.
