Every year, emsiana creates a place of exchange and communicates through musical, literary and visual art, using a language that is understood worldwide, a language that is inviting and requires no prerequisites. Overflow is the theme of the current issue of emsiana; today, in the centre of Europe, we seem to live in abundance. But the more we accumulate, the more unequally it is distributed. And the more we long for walls that keep out those who want to share in this abundance. We often don’t realise that this only cuts us off from the sources of our abundance, sources that, as we know, lie beyond our borders, just like the Rhine. So we continue to accumulate superfluous things, and yet we know that we will only find happiness when we allow happiness to overflow between us. emsiana 2025 will explore the overflow in all its manifestations, between music and art, history and architecture, literature and performance – and, as always, in some of the most hidden spaces of our city.
