Josephine Baker is an icon. She was a global star, a freedom fighter and stood up against racism. She conquered a global audience singing and dancing and used the stage to spread the message that peace, freedom and equality are a universal human right, regardless of skin colour, religion, nationality, gender or sexual orientation. When Josephine Baker performed in Vienna at the start of her first world tour in 1928, the waves of indignation were as high as those of enthusiasm. From then on, she was accompanied by cheers and protests wherever she performed. The exhibition JOSEPHINE BAKER. IDOL IKONE INSPIRATION at the Francisco Carolinum is dedicated to her early performances in Vienna in numerous original photographs from the OÖLKG collection and film documents and shows her impact as a source of inspiration for Austrian artists such as the photographer Madame d’Ora, the architect Adolf Loos and the craftsman Karl Hagenauer.
