Not everyone in Vienna is familiar with ‘Zwidemu’, but the place with the cute-sounding name has long since become a focal point for Vienna’s youth: Here, ZWischen DEn MUseen (officially Maria-Theresien-Platz), you can escape school, parents and everyday life, chill out, get high and find a sense of belonging. But the neo-baroque meadows had to be conquered first. Around 15 years ago, young people occupied a green space surrounded by evergreen ornamental shrubs and fountains, which initially could not even be entered.
Curated by Selin Göksu, Kilian Hanappi and Paul Buschnegg, the exhibition ‘Zwidemu. Between Party and Protest’, curated by Selin Göksu, Kilian Hanappi and Paul Buschnegg, sheds light on the various facets of the young and unconventional Zwidemu public space. What is its composition? What role did beer bans, cannabis fairs and Facebook groups play? And what significance does the place have today? Using works by young Viennese artists, the start gallery provides a historical retrospective that encourages reflection on the current state of the city, space and politics and shows youth culture in connection with the appropriation of space.
