Siolence addresses the oppressive silence surrounding violence against women. In art, violence is often depicted through screams, scars and destruction – Siolence, on the other hand, favours silence. Silence is a refuge and at the same time the reason for the continuation of violence. Developed by Soroptimist Austria with BBDO Vienna, the internationally renowned photographer Elfie Semotan captures the unspoken suffering of women who have been beaten, abused or threatened. The exhibition makes visible what often remains hidden and calls on people not to look away. Siolence will be shown during Women’s History Month and on the occasion of the 69th UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69 / BEIJING+30).
