By repurposing the form and function of geological tools, the New Mineral Collective proposes ‘counter-prospecting tools’ to shift the focus from the extraction of resources to their preservation and healing. Founded in 2012, the New Mineral Collective is the collaborative artistic practice of Canadian artist Tanya Busse (*1981, New Brunswick) and Lithuanian artist Emilija Škarnulytė (*1987, Vilnius). Through photography, film and sculptural installations, the artists engage with contemporary landscape politics to better understand the nature and extent of human interaction with the earth’s surface. Their work questions geography, landscape, ecology and man’s relationship with nature. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with a partner project at Mercer Union in Toronto.
