Water harbours its own fascination; in the form of seas, rivers, ponds, … Julian Palacz dedicates his current exhibition to the Mürz, which meanders and washes between stones. It reveals a play of colours of grey, green, ochre and blue. Light and shadow dance on the surface of the water, while the current draws filigree patterns – a scene that has a special poetry in its random appearance. Julian Palacz follows the course of the Mürz, from a personally significant point – his family home – to its sources. The river becomes a resonating space in which real and imagined memories interweave. The examination of traces ties in with the artist’s earlier works – from the investigation of hidden transport routes in Handle With Care to the analysis of surveillance structures in public space in his Surveillance Studies. The focus is always on visualising hidden processes and their effect on our perception. The exhibition invites us to approach the river with renewed sensitivity as a place characterised by change and diversity. It not only provides insights into the visible and invisible forces that shape the river, but also into the way in which we ourselves relate to nature and its structures and explores the fascination with the unknown in the familiar.
