In times of existential crisis, one needs a refuge, a sanctuary. Art provides a refuge; the concretisation of their inner conflicts and upheavals offers artists an outlet for psychological relief and thus for overcoming the emotional injuries they have suffered. The confrontation with their own existence also harbours the potential for change and reorientation and enables a more hopeful view of the future. Prominent works from the collections of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg were created as a reaction to exceptional internal and external situations and in an endeavour to overcome this experience of crisis with a counter-design. The paintings, prints, photographs and objects on display not only reflect the personal, social and political circumstances at the time of their creation. Rather, these works deal with themes that are more topical than ever in our world, which seems to have come apart at the seams due to the events of war, the consequences of climate change and the increasing polarisation of society.
With works by Max Beckmann, Margret Bilger, Lyonel Feininger, Greta Freist, Adolf Frohner, Richard Gerstl, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Martha Jungwirth, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka, Alfred Kubin, Elsa Lasker-Schüler, Maria Lassnig, Marino Marini, Max Oppenheimer, Madame d’Ora, Florentina Pakosta, Arnulf Rainer, Rudolf Schönwald, Zbyněk Sekal, Sophia Süßmilch, Wilhelm Thöny
