The exhibition Picture Turning Point. Turning Point – curated by Werner Friepesz and Erich Wandaller – provides extensive insights into the history of early photography in Salzburg and is the result of a multi-year research project. The exhibition spans an arc from the beginnings of the new medium in the 1840s to its broad penetration of society, culture and everyday life in the 1870s. The overall project thus also encompasses a highly significant period in the history of Salzburg, when the prince-archbishop’s residence city was redefined as an urban space of bourgeois culture. Early photography accompanied this change and was at the same time its symptomatic expression: in front of the camera, the turning point in Salzburg’s history becomes visible through photographs of people, buildings, cityscapes and natural landscapes; behind the camera, the turning point is carried by photographers in the city and province of Salzburg and driven forward with ever new technical possibilities.
