The Chinese-Canadian artist is a crossover artist between Far Eastern and Western art, equally influenced by van Gogh and Shitao, who have a special significance for his individual development. Wong, who chose to commit suicide at the age of 35, was a late autodidact: his impressive oeuvre was created in the short period of the last eight years of his life. The artist engages with modernist positions as well as with contemporary varieties of expressive art. The exhibition is conceived as a juxtaposition of around 60 paintings and numerous works on paper by Wong and selected works by van Gogh. It is a co-operation with the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Matthew Wong Foundation.
