IMAGINE CLIMATE DIGNITY is the second edition of the BMEIA’s international call for visual artists, a project that was launched under ON THE ROAD AGAIN in 2021 in response to the coronavirus crisis. The concept for IMAGINE CLIMATE DIGNITY was developed by Dr Christoph Thun-Hohenstein. The thematic starting point of this project is a broad understanding of dignity: it is not limited to the dignity of human beings, but also includes the dignity of nature, all living beings and all available resources. At the end of 2023, artists living and working in Austria were invited to submit artistic concepts on the thematic complex outlined here, in cooperation with international colleagues of their choice and for 14 destinations of the Austrian international culture network: Belgrade, Brussels, Istanbul, Cairo, London, Madrid, New Delhi, New York, Beijing, Prague, Rome, Sarajevo, Tokyo and Warsaw. The projects selected by a jury of experts will be shown at the chosen destinations in 2024/2025. In the figurative exhibition curated by Barbara Höller and Simon Mraz at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, all the resulting works will be brought together in a joint show. It is a presentation that also understands ‘Climate Dignity’ as a commitment to action. After all, the research of the participating artists and the resulting works can also lead us all with knowledge and courage into resistance against the constant destruction of our world.
