Okoyomon’s works move between art, poetry and performance. They deal with identity, colonial history, spirituality and the relationship of people to things and the living environment. They combine intimate, personal questions with political and social themes. Okoyomon became known to a wide audience through installations that incorporate organic materials such as earth, plants and animals. At the Venice Biennale in 2022, Okoyomon transformed a hall of the Arsenale into a lush, sprawling ecosystem. Expansive sculptures, densely growing climbing plants, curved paths and small watercourses in a tropical atmosphere created an experiential space that combined natural processes with Afrofuturistic visions – while also addressing the history of plant migration and their displacement. Several new works have been developed for the Kunsthaus Bregenz that explore different themes.
