The exhibition focuses on the central characteristic of the local painterly approaches of this period: the intensive preoccupation with colour. The study of its decorative effect, symbolism, expressive power and technical application was rarely so much at the centre of artistic trends as in Slovenian painting around 1900. The ambivalent relationship between Slovenian artists and Austria and the capital Vienna is a particular focus of the exhibition. Many artists studied or lived temporarily in Vienna, Graz or Lower Austria. This ambivalence was characterised by a feeling of latent exclusion and a simultaneous dependence on state funding. Numerous documents from the Belvedere archive shed new and differentiated light on the cultural and political connections between Vienna and Ljubljana.
