In the smaller cities, there is a persistent feeling of missing out. This feeling, rooted in the centralisation of culture and life in capital cities, prompts an in-depth exploration of what it really means to live outside the central hub. The exhibition attempts to peel back the layers of this experience, uncovering the origins of the ‘small town complex’ and exploring the essence of what makes a city truly vibrant and alive. Celje, with its rich historical and cultural heritage, serves as a starting point for this exploration. Its contemporary history offers a profound reflection on how a city shapes its inhabitants, and how the inhabitants in turn bring the city to life. We ask what it means to experience Celje – to absorb its rhythms, engage with its spaces and become part of its history. The exhibition ‘How are you in Celje? How are you in Graz?’ was created as part of a circular residency for young curators, which was initiated by the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Province of Styria. A Slovenian curator travelled to Graz to engage with the local art scene, and a team of curators from Graz came to Slovenia, to the Centre for Contemporary Art in Celje, to engage with the local art scene.
The exhibition will also be on display at the Centre for Contemporary Art < rotor > in Graz in 2025.
