30 years after the genocide in Rwanda, a double exhibition on the occasion of International Human Rights Day attempts to counteract the forgetting of these events. Photos, texts and statements by survivors provide an insight into ways of coming to terms with these events. In drawings and paintings, we experience the traditional fairytale world through the eyes of second-generation children in Rwanda. In direct co-operation with those affected and with the inclusion of various original testimonies (photographs, texts etc.) from archives, individual situations and incidents from the events of 1994 are sketched in the photo gallery. Personal fragments of memories from people in Rwanda and the diaspora visualise the unspeakable and unimaginable nature of the events. Selected letters open up a view of the suffering of the bereaved. The youth gallery presents drawings and paintings by children of the second generation in Rwanda – born after 1994. The works were inspired by the traditional world of fairy tales and were created as part of a workshop in the neighbourhood house of ‘Rwanda Avenir’ in Kigali. The exhibition organised by Kulturvermittlung Steiermark is curated by the literary scholar and genocide researcher Aurélia Kalisky, in collaboration with Ancilla Umubyeyi, Magnifique Neza, Florence Prudhomme and Michelle Muller – Rwanda Avenir.
