Caroline Mesquita’s work includes sculptures, murals, large-scale installations with integral architectural elements, as well as film and video works. She creates sculptural works from copper and brass plates using various oxidation techniques. She thus ties in with figurative tendencies in modernist sculpture, reminiscent of positions such as Sophie Taeuber Arp or Emmy Hennings. Sheet copper and brass also played an important role in American minimal art, which also inspired her. Mesquita makes her lifeless metal dolls dance with her astonishing style and arrangements in stage-like settings. In doing so, she humorously addresses controversial issues of modernity and its present, such as the relationship between man, nature and technological progress. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition – curated by Jan Tappe – in Austria.
