The collection of the Neue Galerie Graz, which comprises around 70,000 works, has been shown in different thematic areas in recent years. For reasons of space and conservation, Selection is once again condensing the presentation of the collection. Works on paper and photographic works as well as some other exhibits that were lent to prominent exhibitions had to be removed. On the other hand, a public survey revealed an astonishing result, which was incorporated into the new selection. The Selection exhibition, curated by Günther Holler-Schuster, covers the period from 1800 to the present day and thus follows the collection period of the Neue Galerie Graz. The works from the 19th century follow art historical categories – landscape painting, cityscape, portrait, nude, etc. This categorisation would not adequately capture today’s art. Selection therefore attempts to retain the classical categories of content on a historical level in the exhibition and at the same time to accompany and comment on them with later, right up to contemporary exhibits.
