Salzburg is once again under the sign of crime fiction. On three evenings in November, several authors will present their new releases in short readings and moderated discussions at the Salzburg Crime Festival PENG! at the Literaturhaus – with DJ music intros to match the respective book. Exciting literature is presented to the audience in a relaxed atmosphere – books are raffled off in the crime quiz, and drinks and snacks can be taken into the event from the café. The Austrian author Eva Rossmann and the German author Friedrich Ani have been annual fixtures since the beginning, while other crime writers are also repeatedly invited and new ones are constantly being added. The aim of the festival with German-speaking and international authors is to give the ‘dangerously’ lively genre of crime fiction a public audience with readings and talks (and sometimes interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral with film, music and exhibitions), to invite renowned authors as well as debutants and to prepare their new publications, which are well worth reading, for the public in a culinary-critical way. This also builds a bridge between younger and older, between well-known and less well-known writers and shows that the boundaries between U and E have long been blurred – and that good crime novels, short stories etc. also have a fixed place in the programme of a literature house.
