The exhibition ‘vertical limbo’ is a game between inside and outside, between forgetting and remembering, between the ephemeral and the tangible. The central theme in the practice of Lisa Reiter and Sonnhild Essl is the intensive examination of the material as well as the spaces and environments in which we move and stay. In this field of tension, they explore the ‘in-between’, a space that always seems to be in motion. In her sculptural work, Sonnhild Essl deals with ‘the discarded’ – supposedly worthless things that have a past life. The starting point of her work is the artistic alienation of the discarded, and thus the reflection of power structures that are established through the attribution of value. In her sculptures and installations, Lisa Reiter examines the dimension of space – be it the physical workspace, the domestic environment together with the ideas that are embedded in it or the (in)visible interpersonal spaces. The question of how spaces shape reality and utopia is a central theme of her work, as is her exploration of different materials, both found and precisely crafted objects.
