The survey exhibition of Liliane Lijn’s work, realized in cooperation with Haus der Kunst in Munich, is the most comprehensive institutional solo presentation to date of the artist, who was born in New York in 1939 and has lived in London since 1966. Lijn has been working at the intersection of visual art, literature and science for over six decades and has created an extensive body of work that includes sculptures and installations, collages and paintings, videos and performances. Her multimedia practice has its origins in the kinetic art of the late 1950s and in her exploration of surrealist ideas, ancient mythologies and Far Eastern religions. In the 1980s, Lijn created multimedia sculptures in which she explored the body and alternative conceptions of femininity. These interactive works combine the cosmic with the personal and the mythological with high-tech to give female archetypes a contemporary form.
