In the ‘Material.Leidenschaft’ show curated by Daniela Wageneder-Stelzhammer and Miriam Laussegger, eight artistic positions come together that have dedicated themselves to one material and literally work their way through it.
Doris Theres Hofer plays with the perception of the eye and creates embroideries that look like paintings and deceive the eye. Melanie Ender works with industrially manufactured semi-finished goods, which she assembles into delicate objects with careful consideration of their material properties. Arnold Reinthaler captures the passage of time in white marble, breaking with common associations with stone. In her ceramics, Beate Gatschlhofer combines the boundaries between traditional craftsmanship and 3D technology.
The video work Hardly Working by the group Total Refusal expands the concept of material to include the virtual space of video games and Anneliese Schrenk uses the narrative element of the material to address ethical and existential questions with her images made from animal skin. Miriam Laussegger analyses material structures and brings fine structures and the three-dimensional effect of objects to paper in her monochrome screen prints. Edith Payer shows unusual finds from her material collection, which she collects with archaeological flair and arranges into showcases of the throwaway society in the Start Gallery.
