The Salzburg Mountain Film Festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. When the first Salzburg Mountain Film Festival took place in 1994, none of the small festival team thought that the event would become a fixture in Salzburg’s alpine calendar. Just as outdoor sports have changed over the past decades, so have the festival’s appearance and content. However, one thing has remained the same: the love of film, the enthusiasm for the mountain world and its people. The list of well-wishers for the anniversary will be long, and many mountaineering celebrities have already announced their attendance at the opening: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner is expected at DAS KINO first and foremost. For the first time in the festival’s history, a film prize will be awarded. The LOCAL HEROES AWARD for the best film from Salzburg is endowed with a production budget of 3,000 euros for young filmmakers up to the age of 30. Also in the film programme: ‘Via Sedna’ by Ramona Waldner, an all-female sailing and climbing expedition to Greenland and ‘A woman’s place is on the top’ by Gerti Reinisch-Indrich, a film celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first Austrian women’s expedition to Shisha Pangma in 1994. In addition to the famously opulent and high-quality film programme, the live lectures and personal contact with top alpinists are traditionally the second pillar of the festival programme. This year, Ralf Dujmovits will take a critical look at Everest tourism, the Swiss Roger Schäli will talk about his love for the Eiger and the young Styrian Mich Kemeter will present his free solo adventures in the Verdon Gorge. And finally, the topic of ‘fear’ also has a place at the festival: Alexander Huber and the top German alpinist Alix von Melle will talk together about how they deal with this – often life-saving – feeling.
