The exhibition SUBSTANZ – curated by Christian Bazant-Hegemark and Esther Hladik – refers to the basis from which we emerge: our humanity, our social integration and our will to create and thus to carry our own self with its individual positioning into the world. In an exemplary approach, the exhibition presents national and international artists and cultural actors who take social action in their production and/or in private initiatives. Their art and commitment aims to impart knowledge and stimulate emotional processes – to shake things up, provide comfort and give hope. For example, some artists form communities and launch campaigns or funding projects. Others use their specific artistic expression to sensitise the public to urgent issues, enter into dialogue and take a stance themselves.
