Over the course of its history, the Viennale has grown in importance thanks to its programmatic, aesthetic and political principles and has become a reliable fixture on the international stage and an integral part of the calendar for audiences in the city of Vienna. The prestigious festival has been in existence for over 60 years.
The Viennale is a successful attempt to be both an audience festival for a broad, cinema-interested public and to convey and discuss the state of international film culture at a high aesthetic and political level. It is this combination that makes the Viennale so unique.
The current festival programme is characterised by selected monographs, cinematographies and historiographies. The aim is to honour remarkable personalities, genres or thematic focuses of international cinema.
This year, the Viennale once again offers a wide range of programme items: Film screenings, encounters, discussions and special events provide the framework for this top-class film event.
