Huge challenges currently need to be solved: Climate change, global health crises, artificial intelligence, hybrid forms of new warfare and geopolitical tensions are all part of the much-cited multiple crises. The human ability to shape our own destiny is being called into question more than ever. Powerful new technologies are playing an ever greater role in our lives, and it seems that humanity has no choice but to engage with the uncharted territory of these unknown and unexplored worlds. All of this goes hand in hand with dwindling trust in political institutions and the increasing influence of authoritarian ideologies. The ideological certainties of the Cold War are but a distant memory. Finding a way through these uncertainties requires more creativity, exploration and experimentation than perhaps ever before in history. The Vienna Humanities Festival brings together some of the world’s most innovative minds to shed light on the political, ecological, technological, economic, artistic and philosophical dilemmas that threaten us as individuals, but also as a society. Their ideas will help us recognise the contours of a changing new reality and explore the new worlds – local or global, virtual or real, revolutionary or reactionary – with more confidence and a sense of direction.
