Mâine Mă Duc – Tomorrow I Leave – directed by Lukas Schöffel and Maria Lisa Pichler – is a sensitive portrait of a woman who constantly has to leave someone behind, as Maria is a 24-hour carer. Every four weeks, Maria leaves her village in Romania and travels over a thousand kilometres to care for strangers in Austria. But her own elderly parents have to cope alone in the meantime. Her husband Daniel still has the memories of his own years of labouring abroad in his bones. He has now taken over the household. Meanwhile, her sons dream of a completely different future. After four weeks in Austria, Maria returns – she can’t stay. One day, she wants to use the money she earned abroad to open a small bed and breakfast so that she no longer has to travel. Mâine Mă Duc – Tomorrow I Leave is a film about the wishes and dreams of those who leave and those who stay behind. It is a dilemma between social advancement and family cohesion in a Europe torn apart, a film about a Romanian family in which someone is always missing. What do you put up with for a good life? The film will be shown alternately with English and German subtitles.
