Since her beginnings as a performance, photography and video artist, Olia Fedorova has worked primarily with the natural landscapes of her home region, Eastern Ukraine. One constant in her artistic method was her physical presence in this environment, in which she intervened with her own body or introduced inanimate objects. With the full-scale invasion of Russia, she lost access to the landscapes of her home region – the fields, hills and forests north-east of Kharkiv, where she used to perform, were transformed into battlefields littered with landmines and the remains of military vehicles. For a long time they will be associated with nothing but war, devastation and suffering. Familiar places have become shadowy ghosts of themselves, forever vanishing, forever lost, forever stuck in an in-between world, neither real nor imaginary, neither present nor absent. They are so far away that it is no longer possible to say for sure whether the memories of them are true at all. In a specific way, the works exhibited in the off_gallery under the new title ‘Ghosts of Memories / Memories about the Ghosts’ encompass the entire ‘peaceful’ period of Olia’s landscape work.
