Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931), the Finnish artist, was a national hero and an international star in his day. The Belvedere is dedicating the first monographic exhibition in Austria to him in 2024/25 – in cooperation with the Ateneum Art Museum, Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki.
Around 1900, Finland was a Grand Duchy under Russian rule that was striving for independence. With his depictions of the people, myths and nature of his homeland, Gallen-Kallela made a decisive contribution to the formation of a national identity. In addition, his modern visual language, which he developed in a continuous dialogue between Finnish sources of inspiration and impulses from international art centres such as Paris, Berlin, London and Vienna, made him a celebrated artist outside his own country.
