Under the 2024 motto HAND//WERK gedacht+gemacht, craftsmanship and restoration will be emphasised as the foundations of sustainable and heritage conservation work. The claim ‘discover, understand, connect’ is intended to emphasise the principle of Monument Day and raise awareness for the preservation and maintenance of cultural heritage.
Every year, the last Sunday in September attracts thousands of interested people to the country’s monuments and allows them to discover the diversity of cultural heritage in Austria.
On Monument Day, owners open the doors to places that are otherwise inaccessible or only accessible to a limited extent. The importance of monument protection and preservation can be experienced and perceived at first hand through special guided tours and exciting supporting programmes.
The Day of Monuments is not only an Austrian tradition, but also part of the European Heritage Days: an initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union, which is focussing on heritage protection this year with the motto ‘Heritage of Routes, Networks and Connections’.
