20.09.2024 – 16.02.2025
As the centrepiece of the 57th edition of the festival, the group exhibition Horror Patriae – a cooperation between steirischer herbst and Neue Galerie Graz – combines works and artefacts from various collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum with works by contemporary artists, many of which are new commissions.
Organised into several fictional sections, the show tells stories that are based on local myths and reach out into the wider world. Is this imagined museum of a dysfunctional and contradictory nationality the only way to imagine a national museum in a time in which patriotic feelings are positively received, even if they have a dark side?
This and other questions are explored in commissioned works by Sarnath Banerjee, Pablo Bronstein, Madison Bycroft, Ieva Epnere, Assaf Gruber, Jan Peter Hammer, Thomas Hörl, Jakub Jansa, Nikolay Karabinovych, Alina Kleytman, Ingo Niermann and Erik Niedling, Roee Rosen, Marko Tadić, Helene Thümmel and Piotr Urbaniec.
