It is the most comprehensive retrospective to date – in continuation of the exhibition of the same name, which was shown in 2023 at MADRE – museo d’arte contemporanea donnaregina in Naples, with which the Belvedere honours the oeuvre of the Japanese-American artist Kazuko Miyamoto.
Miyamoto has lived and worked in New York since 1964, where she is one of the most important protagonists of the Lower East Side art scene. As an early member of the A.I.R. Gallery and with her gallery Onetwentyeight, founded in 1986, she also promoted the presentation of feminist and (post-)migrant art. Miyamoto first came to Linz in 1980 as a producer of works by the American artist Sol LeWitt, and established a lifelong artistic and friendship network here.
The exhibition brings together key string constructions, early paintings, photographs, drawings and installations by the artist, who has been widely recognised in recent years through exhibitions and acquisitions by major museums in the USA and Europe.
