‘Heimat wirst du …’ – Last year, the Styrian Chamber Music Festival used a quote from the Austrian national anthem at this point: ‘Heimat, bist du …’, it says, followed by the mention of great sons and daughters, gifted beauty and so on.
However, because the theme of homeland now encompasses more than just an actual state, this year’s festival is moving on: ‘Heimat wirst du …’ is the motto of the 2024 festival year, emphasising the development and change of a constantly renegotiated concept that is always ‘on the way’ and never fully at its destination.
Musically, this joy in the motor skills of changing identities is expressed in a programme that does not hesitate to set off: ‘Avanti, avanti’ is the theme of the opening concert with Diknu Schneeberger and Christian Bakanic. This is followed by Balkan sounds married with jazz, new folk music on the Schöckl in Graz, fine Postwirt music, baked Schubert trout and an excursion to the Far East, where the cello is as much a part of the programme as the jang-gu.
There will also be a number of new concert venues to celebrate mobility: The Leechwald forest will be hiked through in the open air, or Burgau Castle will be climbed.
