The finest sound and beats that will make Karlsplatz vibrate over four days. This year’s programme makers, music expert Lisa Schneider (FM4-Soundpark) and musician and author Markus Binder (Attwenger) have researched the current local music scene. This year’s edition brings a summery live cross-section between fresh, oag, rough, crazy, extravagant and presents voices and sounds that express an intense and subjective approach to the current situation.
From Filly to Beaks, Kin Dread, Enesi M., Enns, Lukas Oscar, Apollo Sissi, Lino Camilo, Siska and WYD to Seebühnen headliner, the spirit of experimentation and fearless self-empowerment manifests itself in rainbow-coloured, glittering, danceable hyperpop and then again in radical disturbance. And if the mainstream can ever sound as diverse as Sharktank or Resi Reiner, then it’s high time the old pigeonholes were ripped off their hinges.
In 2024, Popfest will be rocking more than ever before. Acts such as Anda Morts, Baits, Modecenter, Topsy Turvy, Leber and Hase are committed to the punk ethos in their own way. Culk, Zinn, Aze, Viji, Sodl, Laundromat Chicks, Flirtmachine, Potato Beach and The New Mourning embody the most diverse interpretations of guitar music from the extended indie-pop universe.
There will also be shows such as the premiere of singer-songwriter Oskar Haag’s band line-up, a special all-star interpretation (“The Friends”) of Wolfgang Möstl’s Mile Me Deaf repertoire, as well as the unique revival of cult band Sluff. And with the Notwist-related Hochzeitskapelle, the violinist musicologist Hermann Fritz and Divinerinnen, the range of references extends into folk music.
Finally, Popfest celebrates the traditional Sunday festival finale with three special concerts in the baroque Karlskirche, in the centre of whose domed fresco a large-scale neon installation by British artist Cerith Wyn Evans can currently be experienced.
And, as every year, not only is music played, but the discourse about it is also cultivated: The Popfest talks and workshops (Popfest Sessions in cooperation with mica – Music Austria) will take place in the studio space of the new Wien Museum for the first time this year.
