This year’s edition of the outdoor photography festival gmunden.photo is dedicated to the theme of “landscape”: no other genre has experienced a comparable revival in recent years. While the landscape was once considered unsuspicious and almost irrelevant, in the context of the diverse man-made threats and risks facing the planet, the landscape has also undergone a major transformation and politicisation in its artistic representation. Biodiversity and species extinction, tourism, glacier melt, migration, resistance and digital landscape – the focus of this year’s edition is on very different subject areas. The title TERRIBLE BEAUTY is aimed at the tension between traditional, romanticised memories, ideas and images of landscape and the multiple grievances and crises in the context of climate change. gmunden.photo 2024 brings together 20 positions of national and international photographic art and remains true to the principle of presenting big names in photography and young artists side by side. A selection of shockingly beautiful views of landscapes, cities and architecture, carefully curated by Dr Lisa Ortner-Kreil, will be on display. Presented in the Stadtgarten Gmunden in former shipping containers and, for the first time, in an approximately 300m2 art gallery on the festival site, the project is also a contribution to the European Capital of Culture 2024.
