It is said that family is the most important thing in life. It gives us backing, support and security; it shapes and influences who we are and how we feel.
Whether parents, siblings, extended family or family of choice – these connections can have a significant impact on our well-being. Dysfunctional patterns and intergenerational trauma resulting from conflict, violence, neglect or abuse can become deeply entrenched and put a strain on relationships. Not all families are ideal.
Choosing a family freely means maintaining close relationships with people who are not biologically related but occupy an important place in life, such as friends, partners or lovers. These relationships often reflect existing family ties in terms of life attitudes or circumstances and provide a strong support system beyond biological kinship.
Over the course of a person’s life, a photo album becomes a visual chronicle that captures and preserves moments, occasions and the changes in relationships or acquaintances.
These albums preserve the essence of our family ties and serve as tangible records of the passage of time and shared experiences.
The exhibition features works by Franzis Kabisch, Philippe Gerlach, Agnė Juodvalkytė, Reza Kellner, Anna Jurkiewicz and Noah Rachdi, among others.
