Günter Waldorf (1924-2012), born Günter Stessl, was a widely known and influential figure in Styrian cultural life; for example, he was the initiator and founding member of the Forum Stadtpark and one of the originators of today’s Kunsthaus Graz.
In addition, he created an independent oeuvre that processed the various trends that characterised (Austrian) painting in the second half of the 20th century in an unmistakable way and often with his own irony. Waldorf combines the rare phenomenon of his works finding favour with a wider public without submitting to any kind of public taste. It was not in the nature of the artist, who also made a name for himself as a boxer in his younger years, to bow to anyone.
The exhibition, curated by Peter Peer, shows a cross-section of his oeuvre with a limited number of works.
Unmistakably Waldorf!
