It is the first comprehensive exhibition of the work of British artist Rose English in German-speaking countries. In the midst of conceptual art, the dance scene and the feminist scene, English developed her unique way of working in Great Britain in the 1970s. Today, she is one of the most influential performance artists. In her extraordinary interdisciplinary work, she combines elements of theatre, circus, variety and opera to explore the themes of gender politics, performer identity and the metaphysics of presence – the very nature of performance.
Using multimedia installations, the exhibition – curated by Marijana Schneider and Lisa Moravec – offers an insight into her unique way of working. Three of her major stage performances will be shown publicly for the first time in the form of a new site-specific installation.
A commissioned performance programme accompanies the exhibition with performances by younger international artists whose work is related to English’s artistic practice.
