Two avant-gardists from different generations and disciplines – Frederick Kiesler (1890-1965) and Walter Pichler (1936-2012) – engage in a hypothetical dialogue in the main room of Belvedere 21, the starting point of which is a real studio visit by the Austrian sculptor to the Austro-American architect in New York in 1963. Pichler, whose sculptures declared as alternative living spaces in the early 1960s set decisive, also internationally received impulses, meets Kiesler, who after his groundbreaking exhibition displays and architectural visions of the 1920s increasingly turned to sculpture.
The aim of this exhibition is to show the points of contact between the oeuvres of the two artists and at the same time to illuminate the aspects of their work that are virulent from today’s perspective.
The exhibition display will be developed by Sonia Leimer using and adapting selected works of her own, which are located at the interface between sculptural object and architectural setting.
