22.06.2024 – 01.09.2024

In his investigation and interpretation of historically overloaded objects, Franz Kapfer examines methods of historiography and analyses how these are used and sometimes misused politically and in the media. Kapfer thus reveals how historical symbols, ciphers and monuments influence today’s societies and their composition and what political dimension they have.
As part of the 2022 Styrian Visual Arts Award, Kapfer will realise a new large-format group of works dealing with the mythological figure and the sculptural tradition of atlases. Atlases are male, muscular and larger-than-life pillar figures in architecture, based on Atlas, the titanic sky bearer of Greek mythology. This installation will be shown alongside existing works as part of an overall artistic approach and provides a comprehensive insight into the artist’s work. In a combination of new and old works, the exhibition curated by Jan Tappe retrospectively presents a representative selection of the artist’s oeuvre to date. Important groups of works are being shown for the first time in Austria.
