Violence is unfortunately omnipresent these days, sometimes even in comics. Andrea Scrima’s series of drawings entitled Loopy Loonies explores implied violence in contemporary comic and cartoon imagery. Set against the backdrop of current global political catastrophes, the drawings develop a visual vocabulary of blobs, speech bubbles and animated letters to question ideas about dissent, the misuse of language and the nature of emotions such as pain, compassion and disgust.
The drawings are accompanied by texts by Andrea Scrima, fragments of which can be taken home as cards for further reflection.
