21.05.2024 – 26.05.2024
Under the title UMKEHRBAR, the festival offers space for reflection, social discourse and creative ideas for the future. International authors, theatre makers and artists explore the desire for change from different perspectives in a world characterised by climate change, war and destruction.
The festival programme under the artistic direction of Edith Draxl offers a colourful spectrum of formats, such as productions, performances, walks, readings, workshops and discussions, which inspire reflection and encourage active participation.
Among other things, the international project “future.repair.machine” forms an essential part of the Dramatiker|innenfestival, which understands the concept of repair as a multi-layered tool for change in our common spaces. The project emphasises a good relationship with each other, with nature and with the resources that form the basis of our lives.
Rimini Protokoll is also part of the festival as part of future.repair.machine and enables unusual perspectives on our reality.
The Playwrights’ Festival will be officially opened on Wednesday 22 May 2024 by Phyllis Omido, winner of the 2023 Alternative Nobel Peace Prize, who will speak about the waste of resources and the resulting fault lines and scars. The Kenyan environmental activist is fighting for justice and health in Owino-Uhuru against lead poisoning from a battery recycling plant.
But the day before the opening, there is already a lot on offer, such as living room readings and children’s room readings, the scenic installation SIDY Thal – a schtikl in the cultural centre at the Minoriten and the cooperation project TO OWN YOUR OWN WORDS – AND SHARE THEM, to which authors from Slovenia, Croatia and Austria were invited to prepare translations of each other’s drama texts and develop independent adaptations of the respective scenes on the basis of these. The results will be presented to the public at the staged reading in the treffpunkt sprachen library.
