The photographer Elfriede Mejchar, who only gained recognition as an artist at a late stage, is now one of the most important representatives of the Austrian and international photography scene.
The exhibition at musa presents a broad cross-section of Mejchar’s entire oeuvre and shows how an artistic outsider virtually “single-handedly” revitalised Austrian photography in the post-war period. Elfriede Mejchar consciously set herself apart from the photographic mainstream and the common reportage style of her time. She did not seek the so-called “decisive moment”, but approached her subjects very much in a conceptual, serial manner.
In the exhibition cooperation between the Wien Museum, the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich and the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Elfriede Mejchar’s extensive oeuvre will be shown simultaneously at three locations throughout Austria for the first time in 2024.
