In the past, it was common in Austria to spend the hot season in milder climes – to go on a summer holiday. The exhibition explores this phenomenon and examines places that offered the urban population space to relax. These can be found in the earliest summer retreats organized by the Schwabenau family from Linz in Ebensee and Ischl around 1850 right up to the present day of “slow tourism”. The stay in holiday homes organized by companies is also addressed, as are relaxing hikes along the granite hiking trail in the Mühlviertel. Changing means of transport, from the horse-drawn railway to the car and the bicycle, lead the urban population to rural areas.
Artists such as Adalbert Stifter, Klemens Brosch and Helene Clodi-Titze discover and describe the special features of these places in their works. In co-operation with the University of Art and Design Linz and the Linz section of the Alpine Club, examples from the Mühlviertel are presented.
