René Corvaia-Koch, who grew up in the GDR, studied Fine Arts and Interdisciplinary Art in Dresden. He was badly affected by Socialist Realism and found mentors in the post-reunification period who vehemently dedicated themselves to the previously marginalised artistic exploration of pictorial space beyond figurative and symbolic codes.
For René Corvaia-Koch, the abstract and unregulated has always remained the source and subject of his art. Perception is more important to him than knowledge, intuition more important than intention. The materiality and mediality of his works – whether visual, acoustic or performative – are essentially derived from the themes themselves. Reliefs made of ceramic, concrete and wool can be seen on the upper deck.
